Institutional Summary
Blue Ridge Wildlife Center (BRWC) provides wildlife rehabilitation services, educational programs, professional training, and actively contributes to scientific research on local wildlife diseases and environmental threats. BRWC has been providing excellent wildlife care and rehabilitation, providing public awareness and education, training
wildlife veterinarians, rehabilitators, and educators, and contributing to One Health Research since 2000. BRWC also houses and cares for a unique ambassador animal collection of 20-25 reptiles, birds, and mammals, who are essential to providing educational programs and wildlife conservation awareness to the public.
Position Summary
The Associate Veterinarian is a critical role at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. This position works closely with the Hospital Director on all matters related to the veterinary care and rehabilitation program.
Managerial Leadership
- Supervise rehabilitation/veterinary staff when Hospital Director is off site
- Assist with ordering medical supplies, provide input on larger equipment purchases
- Monitor overall workload and help to establish intake limits as needed
- Implement procedures and practices including disease/outbreak safety protocols
- Maintain a positive, healthy, and safe work environment
Veterinary Care
- Triage and physical examination of new patients
- Diagnose and create treatment plan for patients including diagnostics and medical or surgical procedures
- Monitor health of all permanent residents and provide exams/treatment as needed
- Conduct necropsies when diagnosis is unclear as time allows
- Assist with updating patient records daily, review ALL records before they are finalized
- Collaborate with other centers/veterinarians/research institutions/professional organizations to promote the Center and network
- Attend relevant conferences to promote the Center and stay up to date on new treatment options (lecturing and becoming involved in relevant organizations is encouraged)
Rehabilitation
- Abide by all state and federal rehabilitation/exhibit/salvage permit conditions
- Provide input on rehabilitation protocols including rescue, husbandry, enrichment, nutrition, and release
- Assess patients throughout rehabilitation
- Assist rehabilitators with husbandry and treatments, cleaning, etc. as time allows
Training
Veterinary/ Veterinary technician student externs
- Provide students with the opportunity to create and implement treatment plans, assist with surgical procedures and laboratory diagnostics with proper supervision
- Provide students with required evaluations
- Be available for letters of recommendation as needed
Rehabilitation Interns
- Assist intern coordinator with scheduling time for interns to shadow veterinarian
- Participate in weekly education lectures/lab, lead veterinary-related lectures
Other
- Assist with various research projects
- Contribute to quarterly newsletter and social media posts
- Participate in Center events such as open houses, fundraisers, etc.
- Maintain professional licenses (State vet license, DEA license)
- Manage continuing education and keep track of hours
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia or able to get licensed
- 2+ years experience in wildlife medicine
- Sub-permittee on state and federal rehabilitation permits (once hired)
- Computer proficiency and experience with Google products
